Homage to Edith Piaf –  when French Chanson meets Portland Jazz  

Recognized for her unpretentious charm and incredibly soulful, dynamic vocals, Joëlle Morris, along with jazz pianist Matt Fogg  (recently featured on Rich Tozier’s “Friday Night Jazz” on NPR) manages to hit the very tricky balance of incorporating Edith Piaf’s greatest hits such as “La Vie en Rose“, “Hymne à l’amour” and “Non, je ne regrette rien” with fresh and exciting 21st century jazz overtones. Bringing a modern take on classic French chanson to delight audiences with a contagious “joie de vivre”.   Sung both in French and in English.

Resinosa Ensemble, consisting of mezzo-soprano Joëlle Morris, cellist Eliza Meyer, and pianist Bridget Convey, will present music for piano, cello, and voice, including works by André Previn, Lukas Foss, Bunita Marcus, and Maine composers Daniel Sonenberg and Nancy Gunn. Featured on the program will be the World Premiere of UMA faculty composer Richard Nelson’s  “A Forest of Glass, a Kaleidoscope, a Dream”, a cycle of three songs on texts by Ellen Taylor.

The ensemble is looking forward to their 2019-2020 season titled, American Reflections, featuring American composers and poets. The world lost one of our greats, André Previn, in February 2019, in his honor Resinosa will perform his “Four Songs”, poems by Toni Morrison, this is a fabulous set which truly displays Previn’s genius. In 2019, three Maine composers wrote for Resinosa, the following works will be premiered during this season; Daniel Sonenberg’s “Beauty is Not Enough”, text by Edna St. Vincent Millay; the final movement of Nancy Gunn’s “Spiresongs”, poems by Elizabeth Spires; and Richard Nelson’s “A Forest of Glass, a Kaleidoscope, a Dream”, poems by Ellen Taylor.  To complete the program, Resinosa will offer works for cello and piano; Lukas Foss’ “Capriccio” is a well-crafted and energizing work; and Bunita Marcus’ “Untrammeled Thought”, which offers a time to center oneself. This will be an exciting concert, featuring newly composed works by three Maine composers, as well as other musical gems.

The first annual Glenn Jenks Ragtime Revue honors the life and legacy of Camden’s own ragtime pianist and composer by presenting today’s hottest singers and piano players.

On Saturday, October 5, 2019 ~ 30 years to the day from when celebrated Maine composer and pianist Glenn Jenks launched his very first Ragtime Harvest Revue in 1989 to a sold-out crowd ~ the GLENN JENKS RAGTIME REVUE will premiere at the Camden Opera House in Camden, Maine to honor his life, legacy and music. 

Sadly, Glenn Jenks passed away unexpectedly on January 21, 2016. The impact from this loss is still felt today. The GLENN JENKS RAGTIME REVUE will continue Jenk’s original visionary offerings through music, dance, song and humor. 

An exclusive Folio: THE COMPLETE RAGTIME WORKS FOR PIANO BY GLENN JENKS has been compiled and edited by music historian Aaron Robinson in commemoration for the October premiere.

Proceeds from the RAGTIME REVUE will go towards the GLENN JENKS MUSICAL SCHOLARSHIP ~ financially assisting students who wish to further their education in the field of music.

This program is something of an experiment, bringing the performance-practice methodologies of early music to bear on a relatively recent body of music. The earliest piece on the program was published in 1860, or 159 years in the past. In fairness, had early music pioneer Arnold Dolmetsch (1858 – 1940) included music of early- to mid-period Haydn on one of his programs, the gap in time would have been about the same.

This program consists of the music of one decade(the 1860’s) in one country (Spain) composed for one instrument (the guitar). This decade was selected because the guitar used in the concert is a copy of an instrument built in 1864 by Antonio de Torres Jurado (and numbered FE17, or ‘First Epoch 17’). Guitar solos include works by Julián Arcas, Jaume Bosch (born in Barcelona, his German last name notwithstanding), Antonio Cano, and José Viñas; songs by Tomas Damas round out the program.

The Eastport Arts Center’s popular summer concert series continues on August 16 with Resinosa ensemble, including Joëlle Morris, mezzo-Soprano, Eliza Meyer, cello and Bridget Convey, piano. A reception with refreshments courtesy of Sweetie’s Dog-O-Rama will follow the concert.

Resinosa Ensemble focuses on the performance of chamber music, working with living composers, and offering music slightly off the beaten path. The trio’s program, “Prelude to a dream” Meets “American Reflections”, will feature a well-balanced assortment of “night” music and music written by American composers featuring American poets. Included works are Andre Previn’s “Four Songs”, with poems by Toni Morrison; Lukas Foss’ “Capriccio, for cello and piano”; Bohuslav Martinů’s “Nocturne III, for cello and piano”; and Johannes Brahms’ “Two Alto Songs.” The ensemble will also present Boston-based composer Scott Wheeler’s “Three Night Songs”, which he recently arranged for them. Finally, Eastport’s own John Newell composed “Night Songs”, a set of seven songs incorporating poems by Sara Teasdale, for the ensemble. “Newell’s music is wonderful,” said Convey, “and the Resinosa Ensemble considers it an honor to perform.”

The Concert Series runs through August 30. Tickets are $10, and youth tickets are discounted. Tickets may be purchased on the EAC site, or at the door. The Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at www.eastportartscenter.org, and is handicapped-accessible.
