Beethoven’s 9th Symphony – Alto Soloist

Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul

122 Ash St., Lewiston, me

Beethoven-1The Maine Music Society Chorale and Orchestra will join music-making forces with the Bates College Choir and Orchestra, the Schola Cantorum of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the chamber choirs of Edward Little and Lewiston High Schools to present the monumental 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. It is a most fitting way to celebrate this composer by performing his last symphony, which includes the triumphant choral last movement – the “Ode to Joy.”

Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus

Maine Music Society

Gendron Franco Center

Lewiston, ME

Judas MaccabaeusGeorge Frederic Handel composed this oratorio in 1746, five years after he wrote the more famous oratorio Messiah. This piece is based on the period when Judea was occupied by a dynasty of Hellenist kings who set about the destruction of the Jewish religion. The adherence to all Jewish law was forbidden. The story unfolds with the solos and choruses dramatizing the fight of the Maccabees against – and their eventual victory over – the occupying kings. The stunning music includes famous choruses, most notably the “Hallelujah, Amen.” You are sure to be moved by the magnificent music of this Baroque master.

“The mezzo-soprano Joëlle Morris sang with the requisite passion, conveyed in an admirably dark vocal tone.”
