Folk Songs to the Guitar

Portland Conservatory of Music Noonday Concert Series

First Parish Church,

425 Congress St, Portland, Maine

spanish-guitar

For centuries, the guitar has been an instrument intimately associated with the human voice.   Though the ‘folk song’ is usually seen as a popular genre, it occasionally has been raised to the level of art song, and three such sets are featured in this concert.  Mezzo-soprano Joëlle Morris and guitarist Timothy Burris will perform selections of Manuel da Falla’s “Siete Canciones populares españolas” (1914); Matyas Seiber’s “Four French Folk Songs” (1959); and Benjamin Britten’s “Folksong Arrangements” (1961).  Guitar solos by Miguel Llobet and Daniel Fortea fill out the program.

Free to the public

“The mezzo-soprano Joëlle Morris sang with the requisite passion, conveyed in an admirably dark vocal tone.”
